Get a Future In Teaching

Get FIT!

The mission of the Get FIT program is to provide support for students who are interested in becoming teachers.  This support is geared to create a pipeline from high schools through community colleges and into the UHM College of Education.

UH Manoa COE Students with a Future in Teaching

Get FIT is a program within the College of Education (COE) that supports students who are interested in pursuing teaching as a career.  The program supports several initiatives and provides opportunities for students to collaborate with each other, with K-12 schools, and with the wider community. A path to graduation is mapped and planned with each student.

Freshmen are invited to explore the idea of teaching as a career.  Sophomores are supported as they engage the process of applying to the COE.  Juniors participate in activities to enhance their work within the college, and seniors are given opportunities to excel in their chosen field of education.  Additionally, graduate students are invited to become mentors to the undergraduate students.

Get FIT Scholars

Students are invited to apply for the Get FIT Scholars program.  These students clearly demonstrate an extra commitment to learning about teaching and the field of education.

Get FIT Scholars actively participate in service learning projects and attend a required number of sponsored events each semester.  These include educationally focused films, coffees and dinners with community educators, and advising sessions.

Get FIT Scholars may receive stipends each semester depending upon successful completion of requirements as well as availability of funds.

Residential Learning

Johnson Hall is the site of our Residential Learning community. Come live in a residence hall with other students, all of whom are interested in a career in education!

  • On-site advising and educational resources
  • Service Learning Project
  • Faculty advisors and on-site activities
  • Connections to the educational community

Get FIT and CESA

All Get FIT students are encouraged to become active in the COE by joining the College of Education Student Association, CESA.  This way they can participate in committees, college-wide events, and integrate themselves into the COE community.

Get FIT and Service Learning

The provision of applied educational experiences, including service learning, is imperative for the future of education; therefore, students in the Get FIT Program are supported and encouraged to apply their learning whenever possible.

Get FIT Scholars participate in service learning by posting blogs for high school students who are considering a career in teaching when they graduate. The Get FIT Scholar's blogs also provide outreach to and communication with the local community, members of the legislature, and other teachers.
