How do I get started?

The best way to start is to contact a KRS faculty member in the HPETE program and meet with him/her to discuss coursework and requirements. It is recommended that this be done as early as possible in coursework (within the first semester or year of enrollment at UHM).

How long does the program take?

The KRS dual degree course of study alone is 110 credits. If course loads of 15-16 credits are taken a term, the program can be completed in about four years, including student teaching. Courses taken during the summer may shorten this amount of time.

Can I teach in another state?

Yes. Certification and licensure in Hawai`i is reciprocal in 44 other states across the country. Guidelines regarding licensure in other states may differ slightly with respect to sub-tests required and as such must be looked into prior to application. However, certification and ability to teach health and physical education makes students marketable anywhere.

What if I have a degree in another area like history, can I become certified to teach PE?

Individuals who have earned a degree in a non-education or physical education major can work toward a certificate in Health and Physical Education. Coursework in this area and length of time depend heavily on the previously taken courses and if they were related to this content area. For individuals with a degree in an area not related to physical education, the course of study is between 54-55 credits. The number of total credits required may lessen if the degree was physical education related (e.g., non-teaching degree). Time will depend on full-time or part-time enrollment status. This certificate program is a linked to the Master of Science degree in Physical Education in that 15 credits required for this certificate are from within the graduate program. Upon completion of the certificate, if desired, interested individuals may complete the remaining 15 credits of coursework and thesis for a master's degree.

What if I'm on a neighbor island and want to teach PE. Are there online courses?

At this time the majority of coursework must be done here at UH Manoa. However, the student teaching residency may be completed elsewhere on another island if a mentor teacher can be identified by the KRS faculty and is willing to help.
