Finals week is here and SMAP ambassador Niya shares some of her Favorite study spots on campus:

1. East-West Center Japanese Gardens.

The Japanese Gardens are located behind the East-West Center on campus. This peaceful garden includes a waterfall, pond, streams, and a large grass space. This is a great place to enjoy the beautiful weather in Hawaii, while being productive and studying. I like to make sure that I wear sunscreen and bring a blanket or towel to sit on the grass!

2. Bale

If you are like me I love to eat while I study. I love studying at Bale because it is a Vietnamese cafe that serves banh-mi, sandwiches, pho, snacks, and other foods to enhance your study experience. After ordering your food there are plenty of seating inside and outside to study and eat your food!

3. The Courtyard at the Quad

I love a good study time outside. The courtyard at the Quad has a huge spacious grass space that is practically empty during finals week. I love to grab a towel or blanket and sit under one of the trees to enjoy the outdoors while studying for my finals!

4. 3rd Floor Campus Center

The 3rd floor at campus center offers seating inside and outside of the student union. Also the outdoor seating options at campus center is covered, so in the event of rainy weather you can still enjoy the outdoors without getting wet. The inside of the 3rd floor at campus center offers seating space and ac (which is very important for those warm days on campus).

5. Outside of the Life Science Building

The Life Sciences Building offers study space right in front of their building and offers desk space. I enjoy studying here especially right after class when I have my backpack. Instead of having to pack a towel or blanket to sit on the ground I can easily sit on one of the desks outside of the Life Sciences Building and have a good study time while enjoying the outdoors.

Passing on the ‘ike of our kūpuna is more than teaching, it’s creating space for our haūmana to truly connect. Through planting and learning about lei, they begin to understand that a lei is not just something you wear, but something you grow with intention, patience, and aloha. Each step, from caring for the plant to creating the lei, carries meaning. As Kumu its important guide them, but also allow them to explore, feel, and build their own connection,so these traditions continue to live on through them.

Ways to say thank you this National Teachers Day: write a note, send a kind email, support their classroom, or tell them they’re appreciated. Small gestures go a long way. 🍎📚
