The University of Hawai‘i (UH) at Mānoa College of Education (COE) Department of Curriculum Studies was recently awarded a $282K grant by the U.S. Department of Education, Preschool Development Grant. In partnership with the State Public Charter School Commission, the COE will administer tuition stipends to students enrolled in early childhood education programs (ECE) throughout the UH system who are practitioners in the workforce.

“Early childhood educators are among the lowest paid occupations, despite research on the importance of quality experiences in the critical early years,” said ECE Program Director Robyn Chun. “Low compensation makes it especially difficult to grow a well-qualified workforce at a time when the state is increasingly interested in following the national trend to invest in early learning.”

Tuition stipends are intended for those already working in the field who are seeking community college entry-level certificates through doctoral degrees in ECE programs, including teacher education programs in Hawaiian language and culture.

Beginning summer 2018, eligible teachers and educational assistants in U.S. Preschool Development Grant Charter School Preschools and state funded Executive Office of Early Learning Preschool programs, as well as specialists in non-profit ECE and parent engagement settings, will receive tuition stipends to help mitigate the financial barrier to pursuing their educational goals.

Chun added, “This is a milestone investment that targets a vulnerable group of working professionals in an area of critical need. The COE is grateful to the Charter School Commission, UH System ECE Faculty, the Executive Office of Early Learning, the Hawai‘i Association for the Education of Young Children, and so many more for helping us connect early childhood educators in the workplace with the stipends.”
