Description:  The endowment will honor, in perpetuity, the late Alice S. Daeufer and Carl J. Daeufer, who, respectively, as an assistant professor and emeritus professor of education served a combined total of 66 years at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa College of Education and the State of Hawai'i in the field of education. Alice retired in 1989 and Carl in 1994. At the time the Daeufers established the first scholarship in their names, Alice stated, "We had favorable experiences at the University. We want to help students wishing to teach by giving these scholarships." Carl said, "It is our hope the lecture series will focus on issues of pre-service preparation of teachers consistent with the mission statement of the College of Education." Both Carl and Alice were members of the University of Hawai'i Professional Assembly (UHPA), where Carl served on the board of directors for 12 years and Alice volunteered her services.
