What is the Frances M. J. & Alexander L. Pickens Scholarship in Secondary Education?

Description:  This endowment honors Frances M.J. & Dr. Alexander Pickens, who moved to Hawaii in 1962. A noted metal smith and jewelry maker, Frances Pickens earned her MEd. from UH in 1976 and went on to head the art department at Kamehameha Schools. Professor Pickens joined the College of Education as an associate professor in 1962 and, for the next 27 years, headed the art education at the College. Before retiring with emeritus status in 2001, Dr. Pickens served 12 years as Special Assistant to the Dean for College Development & Alumni Relations. As a testament to Dr. Pickens' accomplishments in establishing the scholarship and fundraising programs at the College, the Office of Development at the College was named in his honor in 2002.
Purpose:  The purpose of this fund is to assist students enrolled in Secondary Education programs at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, College of Education.

Enrollment Status:  Full-Time
Additional requirements: Preference given to students in the arts, which includes applied arts and performing arts. The prospective recipient should have a GPA of outstanding scholastic achievement and have a commitment to teaching and improving education in Hawaii. The prospective recipient should be permanent residents of the State of Hawaii and have some degree of financial need, not necessarily as defined by federal guidelines. It is the donors' intent that awards be no less than $2000 per student per academic year.
