Stipend & Funding Opportunities

STIPENDS (33 credits): May be available to candidates who agree to teach SPED in a Hawaii DOE school for a minimum of 3 years after program completion.

FEDERAL TEACHER LOAN FORGIVENESS: SPED teachers at Title I schools can qualify for up to $17,500.00 in loan forgiveness. See Teacher Loan Forgiveness (new page)

Program Pre-requisites

  • Praxis Core: Writing (must submit passing scores by March 1, 2019)
  • Complete one pre-requisite course (3 credits). Courses are available summer prior to start of program.
    • SPED 304 (Mild/Moderate only)
    • SPED 412 (Severe/Autism only)
  • Offered in summer prior to start of program
    • SPED 501 Program Orientation (1 credit). Information to register is provided upon admission into program
  • Laptop required upon admission

Application Pre-requisites

  • Bachelor’s Degree from a UHM recognized institution
  • GPA: 2.75 or above

Application Requirements

  1. Applications:
    • College of Education (Makalei)
    • UHM System Application Form (SAF)
  2. All Official Non-UH Transcripts
  3. Submit the following using the Makalei application:
    1. Current resumé or curriculum vita
    2. Three professional references
    3. Video recorded responses and essay
