The University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa College of Education Alumni Association (COEAA) elected three new board members during their General Membership Meeting on June 26, 2026. The COEAA also acknowledged outgoing board members, Holly Kiyonaga, Karen Moriyama, and Ellen Schroeder, for their six years of service.
New COEAA Board Members
Alan Shoho earned an MEd at UH Mānoa and taught at several schools in Hawaiʻi. He has over 35 years of higher education experience, most recently serving as Provost and Chief Executive Officer at New Mexico State. Prior to that, he led the School of Education at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and before that at the University of Texas San Antonio. He credits professors at UH Mānoa for helping him realize his passion for helping local students achieve their dreams of becoming teachers, counselors, school leaders, or health professionals.
Stacy George received her BEd, MEd, and PhD from UH Mānoa and is presently on the faculty of the COE. She is passionate about interdisciplinary teaching, science and STEM education, and supporting teacher preparation. Dr. George is excited about strengthening connections between the COE, alumni, and local schools, ensuring that future educators are well-prepared for the diverse classrooms they will lead.
Avis Nanbu has a BEd in Early Childhood Education from UH Mānoa, an MEd from the University of Connecticut, and a Hawaiʻi School Administrator certificate from UHM. She has served in several capacities in the Hawaiʻi Department of Education including as a Complex Area School Renewal Specialist and as the principal at Waialua High and Intermediate and Mililani Mauka Elementary School. Her goal as a COEAA Board member is to support new teachers to the profession and to shape the leaders of tomorrow.
