Our Project in Hawai‘i’s Intertidal (OPIHI) was recently showcased as an exemplary National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) “B-WET” project from the Hawai‘i region. B-WET is NOAA’s Bay Watershed Education and Training Program, which empowers students to take action through meaningful watershed educational experiences. OPIHI, a citizen science program in the college’s Curriculum Research and Development Group, has been training middle and high school teachers and students to monitor Hawai‘i’s understudied rocky intertidal areas for more than 10 years. Participants collect authentic scientific data while improving their understanding of the local watershed and scientific process.
