Dr. Janet Kim’s research focuses on integrating the fields of marketing, enrollment management, and education as a strategy for addressing teacher workforce shortages. Specific interests include understanding motivations for teaching, how to best support underrepresented populations across the enrollment funnel lifecycle, and engaging in data collection systems and measures to best inform recruitment practices and state workforce initiatives.

Key initiatives includes partnering with local high schools to provide EdRising and other recruitment events, providing a Cooperating Teacher academy for pre-service candidate mentor teachers, and funding scholarships to underrepresented students pursuing special education licensure programs.
  • Kim, J. & Govin, D. Governor’s Emergency Education Relief (GEER) Grant (2021, July). SPEDucator Project. $315,600, PI. Dr. Kim led a group of 15-20 high-quality special education teachers in Hawai‘i as a recruitment and retention initiative during SY 2020-2021 and SY 2021-2023. Project was a collaborative effort between the UHM COE, Department of Special Education and Hawai‘i Department of Education to support current special education teachers and engage in activities and initiatives to support recruitment efforts to bringing more individuals into the profession.
