Research Overview
Dr. Marija Čolić’s research focuses on autism, examining the intersections of stigma, family dynamics, and play-based interventions for children with developmental disabilities. Her work seeks to answer a key question: How can we create inclusive, evidence-based practices that reduce stigma, support skill development, and enhance the quality of life for autistic individuals and their families? Dr. Čolić is particularly interested in understanding how stigma impacts the experiences of autistic individuals and their families, including barriers to accessing therapeutic services like Applied Behavior Analysis. Her research aims to reduce these barriers by promoting equitable, family-centered approaches that empower caregivers and respect the diverse needs of autistic individuals. A significant focus of her work is designing and evaluating play-based interventions for preschool-aged autistic children. These programs are tailored to foster social play skills, improve independence, and address unique cultural and social contexts. Through methods such as design-based research, qualitative analysis, and community-based participatory approaches, Dr. Čolić creates practical solutions grounded in the lived experiences of autistic individuals and their families. As both a researcher and practitioner, Dr. Čolić bridges the gap between research and practice. She emphasizes collaboration with families, educators, and community stakeholders to ensure her work is impactful and culturally responsive. By integrating diverse perspectives, including those of autistic individuals, her research advances holistic, inclusive, and sustainable approaches to improving quality of life and reducing stigma.
