The College of Education Research Institute (CERI), in collaboration with the proposed Mataio Kekūanāoʻa Department of Hawaiian Education, with support from the Department of Curriculum Studies invites All COE Faculty and Staff to participate in a College of Education Hui Heluhelu (Reading Group).
Join us on Queen Liliʻuokalani’s birthday for a conversation and celebration of Liliʻuokalani centered around her book: Hawaiʻi’s Story by Hawaiʻi’s Queen
This is the first session of our new initiative, a Hui Helehelu professional learning community at our UH COE, which will allow us to build pilina across departments.
We seek to move towards the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa’s Strategic goal of “Model(ing) what it means to be an indigenous-serving and indigenous-centered institution: Native Hawaiians thrive, traditional Hawaiian values and knowledge are embraced, and UH scholarship and service advance all Native Hawaiians and Hawai‘i” (Imperative 1). Specifically, the Hui Heluhelu addresses the following objective: Create opportunities for all UH students, faculty, staff, executives and regents to inform their work by learning about Hawaiian language, culture, knowledge, and the past and present impacts of colonization.
Our first session takes place on Queen Liliʻuokalani’s birthday, honoring her work and legacy. We will continue to have additional readings and sessions throughout the year.

We recognize that this is a quick turnaround to read this text, so please know that we would still like for you to attend the event even if you cannot complete the entire text. The book selection for our second Hui Heluhelu event will also be announced at this event.
