How did you become interested in the field of education?

While I was completing my undergraduate degree, I had no intention of becoming a teacher. However, when I started working at a corporate job, I realized that I would not be happy working in an office environment. At that time, I completed a yoga teacher training and found that I really loved being in the role of an educator. I felt very at home in a space where people were learning and growing together. I decided at that time to become a math teacher; however, it was still another seven years before I found the right program and job opportunity.

Why did you choose the Ethnomathematics Program?

I found the Ethnomathematics program because a friend of mine sent me a flyer about it back in 2015. Math has always been my favorite subject, but traveling is also a passion of mine. I love to learn about and experience different places, cultures, and languages. When I heard about Ethnomathematics, I knew I would have to pursue the program one day. It takes two of my greatest passions and combines them together.

How do you think this program will impact or benefit your career path?

I have been teaching at a traditional public high school the last four years, but decided to switch to an alternative, project-based high school. The Ethnomath program is giving me the tools to transform math from a pretty lifeless, cultureless class into something more relevant and meaningful for my students.

Is there anyone in particular who inspired you to pursue a career in education?)

I had many wonderful teachers growing up who inspired me and supported my growth, but my eighth grade Algebra teacher was one of the most influential in my decision to become a teacher. I enjoyed her math class, but really enjoyed the way she treated me as a person – not just a student.

I'm interested in learning more about a degree or certificate in Curriculum Studies.
