MEd-CS MSLMED (Middle & Secondary Level Emphasis M.Ed.) is a 30-credit, online, 2-year, cohorted track for educators of adolescent students broadly defined as age 10 through young adulthood. Teachers, counselors, administrators, and post-secondary faculty will be supported in creating developmentally and culturally responsive curriculum, classrooms and schools. A standards-based Portfolio serves as the Plan-B “thesis” project, providing concrete evidence of the graduate’s proficiency in educational leadership with adolescent students. Classes are completely online, requiring a computer with microphone and speaker as well as a reliable internet connection.

Who should consider this program

Educators and other professionals who work in settings focused on the education and well-being of Adolescents — this developmental level begins as early as age 10 and can continue well into the twenties. Thus, professionals at all levels of schooling can be served in this program: Elementary; Middle/Intermediate/Junior High; High School; Post-Secondary.

Paper Applications

If you choose to submit a paper application you must download and complete the paper application (select “Graduate Admissions Application and Fee Payment Form”). Please carefully review the Graduate Division application instructions (select “Graduate Admissions Application General Information and Instructions”) and comply with the most current requirements and submission procedures. if you are applying for summer admission pay particular attention to the “Summer Applicants” section which states:

Please write in your semester of application if you are applying to a graduate program with summer admission.

It is a good idea to submit copies of all Graduate Division application materials to the COE department you are applying to with your COE application materials.

When completing a paper application, if you wish to qualify to pay resident tuition at UHM based on residency status or Board of Regents exemptions you should also submit the Residency Declaration Form.

Undergraduate Cumulative GPA View This Task

An Undergraduate Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher is required.

The Graduate Division at the University of Hawaii at Manoa (UHM) requires an undergraduate cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher to be considered for admission. Some departments however may admit students with GPA’s that are below a 3.0. Departments consider the GPA along with other factors when making their admission decisions.

Submitted Transcripts View This Task

A transcript from each post-secondary institution attended is required.

You should also including transcripts from, any study abroad or exchange programs, summer programs, and non-degree work and extension programs. Your official transcripts need to be sent directly to the Graduate Division directly from the issuing institution(s), or in sealed institutional envelopes if submitted with the application.

UH Transcripts

Transcripts are not required for course work completed at any of the UH campuses. Graduate Division Student Services will obtain UH transcripts on behalf of applicants.

The MEd CS-MSLMED is offered through Outreach College.  All participants (Hawaii resident, Non-resident, and International) in this program pay the Hawaii-resident per-credit course rate and fees.

Delivery

MSLMED is a 100% online program delivered primarily via the ZOOM e-classroom system, requiring a computer with microphone and speaker as well as a reliable internet connection. The great majority of instruction is synchronous, i.e., everyone online “live” together. Course work typically involves two fall and spring semesters along with the three associated summers. Fall and spring schedules typically involve one three-credit class (usually on Mondays), plus one one-credit, monthly seminar (Wednesdays). Summers usually call for two three-credit classes and possibly the one-credit seminar. A standards-based Portfolio serves as the Plan-B “thesis” project, providing concrete evidence of the graduate’s proficiency in educational leadership with Adolescent students. Monthly seminars with close faculty support help all participants to construct their portfolios on an ongoing basis in the program.

Coursework

The MEd-CS MSLMED track is a 30-credit graduate program consisting of the following:

  • 4 core courses (12-credits)
    • EDCS 622: Curriculum Leadership (3)
    • EDCS 606: Introduction to Research (3)
    • EDCS 632: Qualitative Research Methods (3) or approved alternative research methods course
    • EDCS 667: Seminar in Curriculum Issues (3)
  • Minimum 6 specialization courses (18-credits) – required and/or recommended coursework and directed study in specialization track, i.e., focused on Adolescents. Courses should be chosen in consultation with advisor.
  • Plan B Paper/Project — MSLMED Standards-Based Portfolio
