    Brief Biography

    Dr. Kathleen Berg has been an educator and researcher for nearly 40 years, serving in a variety of roles at the University of Hawaii (UH) College of Education (COE) and the Curriculum Research & Development Group (CRDG) and University Laboratory School (ULS). Dr. Berg was appointed director of CRDG in 2012, having served as associate director since 2003. She holds a doctorate in educational psychology and has been involved in teaching and program research and evaluation for much of her career. Her experience includes project management and mathematics teaching and curriculum development at CRDG, and teacher education and research as faculty with the Masters of Education in Teaching Program at UH COE. She has teaching experience with students at all grade levels from elementary to graduate school. Dr. Berg has been the principal investigator, director, or co-­director of a number of projects at CRDG including the middle school project at ULS and several externally funded projects in K–12 mathematics curriculum development, school safety, and military dependent education. Her work has resulted in presentations, reports, and publications on diverse topics including mathematics education, teacher education and professional development schools, cooperative learning, critical thinking, computer assisted instruction, safe and drug-free schools, student support systems, and issues of military dependent education. She was appointed as the first Hawaii State Commissioner for the Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunity for Military Children in 2009, served as the vice chair of the national commission beginning in 2009, and since June of 2012 has been chair of the national commission. Dr. Berg retired in 2009 as a brigadier general in the Hawaii Air National Guard, where she served as a traditional, part-­time guard member for over thirty years. During 2007 and 2008 she served as the United States Pacific Command (USPACOM) representative on the Advisory Council on Dependents Education (ACDE) Department of Defense school site visits to Europe and the Pacific.
