    Brief Biography

    Jean Johnson, Associate Professor at the University of Hawaii, has been with the Center on Disability Studies (CDS) for the past two decades, serving as Acting Director (2004-2005 & 2013-2014) and Associate Director (2006-2013). She holds an undergraduate degree in Special Education (teaching the deaf), a masters degree in Audiology, a MPH in Maternal and Child Health, and a doctoral degree in Public Health from the University of Hawai‘i. Before joining CDS, she was the Coordinator of the Zero-to-Three Hawaii project to provide services to infants and toddlers with special needs. She spent many years in Guam and Micronesia establishing programs for children and adults with disabilities. Currently, she serves as Principal Investigator on several Native Hawaiian preschool projects and on a number of newborn hearing screening projects in the Marshall Islands and American Sāmoa. In 2006, she received the Leadership Award from the College of Education Faculty Congress and the Easter Seals National Humanitarian Award. The Special Parent Information Network named her Professional of the Year in 2009. In 2011, she received the National Antonia Brancia Maxon Award for EDHI Excellence and in 2014, the Lifetime Achievement Award from the University of Hawaii’s College of Education. Since 2009, she has served on the Access to Justice Commission and currently Chairs the Committee on Overcoming Barriers to Access to Justice (COBAJ). Dr. Johnson is passionate about issues of social justice, especially as they relate to young children, persons with disabilities, and Micronesians.
