    Brief Biography

    Dr. Deborah Zuercher works to empower teachers to become agents of change that positively impact student achievement in their classrooms. She believes that education should cultivate democracy. As such, instruction must incorporate academic rigor, contextual appropriateness, and social justice. She has served as a classroom teacher, assistant secondary principal, middle level principal, education research consultant, and university teacher educator. Deborah is a tenured full professor in the Master of Education in Teaching Program at the University of Hawai’i at Manoa and has been the Principal Investigator for the American Samoa Teacher Education Program. Deborah is passionate about the art and science of instruction. In ten years at the University of Hawaii she has taught a total of 96 courses with a mean for all courses taught at 4.89/5.0. She has been nominated for numerous teaching awards and observed twice by the Center for Teaching Excellence. Deborah teaches and advises teacher candidates in American Samoa and graduate teacher candidates enrolled in the College of Education in Hawai’i, American Samoa, and across Micronesia. In 2013, Dr. Zuercher earned the College of Education Leadership Award and a Fulbright International Administrative Scholarship to Germany. Dr. Deborah Zuercher’s primary research interest is applied qualitative action research, which describes the effects of facilitating instructional interventions that are contextualized within unique cultural learning environments. Place-based adaptation of national standards is another consistent research agenda. She has a) 23 publications and presentations at over 70 conferences of significant recognition by the national and international community of scholars active in the same field; b) three published book chapters, c) nationally peer-reviewed program recognition report for NCATE accreditation process, d) significant grant awards, f) published dissertation, and g) 10 articles in periodicals that have positively promoted contextualized teacher quality development in American Samoa. Currently, she facilitates professional development to deepen teacher leaders’ understanding about teacher evaluation and what it means to contextualize English Language Arts Common Core State Standards to prepare students for college and career readiness in unique Pacific learning communities such as Hawaii, Republic of Marshall Islands, American Samoa, Saipan, Guam and Palau. She lives on the Leeward Coast of Oahu where she enjoys hiking, ocean kayaking, scuba diving and horseback riding in the volcanic Makaha mountain valley.
