In Summer 2026, students in EDEF 671: Capacity Building in Human Resources: Global Educational Partnership participated in an intensive graduate course exploring the organizations, policies, and partnerships shaping global education, leadership, management, and partnership collaboration. A highlight of the course was the opportunity to visit major international institutions in Washington, DC, including the World Bank, the Inter-American Development Bank (IADB), the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and the Global Partnership for Education (GPE). Through these visits, discussions, and interactions with policymakers, innovators, implementers, and experts in the field, students gained firsthand insight into the roles these organizations play in educational development and reform worldwide. Dean Murata was also able to join the program’s visit to the World Bank.

The course encouraged students to critically examine the infrastructure, sustainability, and impact of major educational institutions and agencies worldwide. The Washington, DC experience also offered valuable opportunities for professional development and networking, allowing students to learn about diverse career pathways, build professional connections, and consider how their own academic and professional interests might contribute to the field of global education.

Here are some powerful reflections and insights from the participants:

Jessica:

“This class offered an opportunity to immerse myself in dialogues and spaces with the education specialists and economists at the World Bank for one week. From presentations and discussions, I was able to learn more about their personal stories and the work that they do in their respective roles and regions, which goes way beyond what numbers in the reports can tell. It also gave me a glimpse into possible careers after the graduate degree.”

Erin:

“This course provided a unique opportunity to learn about the realities of international education development from those working in it – a direct connection to the work. In the end, the course expanded my thinking around collaboration and coordination among international agencies and governments to improve education systems and learning outcomes. I’ll take away important lessons that affect my academic and professional career, in addition to the great learning from bright classmates and an experienced professor.”

Cheyenne:

“It was a really great opportunity for professional development and networking, especially for those looking to get more involved in international development and global education policy. It was a valuable experience to meet and talk with so many individuals who have found their way to the World Bank after coming from so many different backgrounds and sectors. Each presenter described a unique pathway to the positions they have now, but something they all had in common was a moment of connection or mentorship. I think this course could be that moment for people who are interested in doing similar work or people who generally want to work in DC. My experience with the course definitely demystified the particulars of how education development is considered/prioritized at organizations like the World Bank and gave me a good idea of how I could pursue a career there.”

Asia:

“EDEF 671 was exceptionally valuable for two key reasons. First, connecting with professionals from the World Bank, UNESCO, and diplomatic circles expanded my view of multilateral organizations beyond traditional finance and administration. Because my passions lie at the intersection of international education, language pedagogy, and policy, engaging with guest speakers highlighted a way to drive system-level impact without entering formal politics. Second, hearing directly from practitioners challenged me to think beyond traditional career paths and recognize the versatility of my degree. I now see a much broader range of global opportunities open to me.”
