How to Apply Instructions

Fall admission only:

  • Degree: Bachelor’s Degree
  • Program: BEd, Exceptional Students and Elementary Education
  • Select Program Options
    • Verify everything is correct:
      • Fall 2023
      • Licensure
      • Dual Licensure in Exceptional Students & Elementary Education
      • Manoa Campus
      • Oahu
      • No (Default)- Change to yes if you have already received a bachelor’s degree
  • Complete Licensure Track Application Checklist
    • Apply to UH System
      • Check this box if you are already a UHM student or if you already transferred via the Ka‘ie‘ie program
      • Otherwise, apply using the steps provided below and then check the box
    • Cumulative GPA (2.75)
      • Check off that you understand. If your GPA is a little below, you can check the box with the understanding you are aware of the minimum requirement. If your GPA is below a 2.5 you would have needed to contact an OSAS advisor to discuss your options (coe.hawaii.edu/osas).
    • Completed 55 Credits*
    • Completed UHM General Ed Core Requirements* (may include an associate degree from a community college)
    • Completed licensure track pre-requisite courses* (SPED 304 & STE/EDEF 360)

*You should have verified these course requirements first with an OSAS advisor. Check the box if you have completed or are in the process of completing these requirements.

    • 40 hours of documented group leadership experiences
      • Upload the form, a copy can be found under “Forms & Documents”. Upload into your application.
    • B.Ed. elementary program choice
      • Due to limited availability in some Elementary Education programs, use the B.Ed Program Choice google form to indicate your first, second, and third choice of program interest.
    • Interview with program
      • Read the guidelines regarding completing an interview. Download the letter and then check the box. Applicants will be contacted to schedule their interviews depending on when they submitted their application.
    • Personal statement/essay
      • You can draft your response in Word or another word processor and then copy and paste into the box. Don’t check the box until it is complete, as you won’t be able to go back in and edit.
    • Three professional references
      • You need to include the name, email, phone number, and relationship for three references
    • Repeated courses, if any
      • If you have repeated courses, you can list them here. Otherwise, just check the box.
    • Prior Post-Secondary Program Enrollment
      • Please verify if you have ever been dismissed from a post-secondary program (bachelor’s degree, certificate, advanced degree, etc.)

Once the checklist is completed, continue with the application process and fully submit the Makalei Application.

UH Mānoa System Application ($70) + Transcripts

This application is only for students who are transferring or applying to UH Mānoa for the first time. Current UH Mānoa students or transfer students from the Ka‘ie‘ie program do NOT need to complete this step.

        • Select Fall 2023
        • List estimated number of credits completed
        • Planned Course of Study: Elementary Education – BEd (This is the degree program for all the different elementary tracks)
      • College Information
        • You can list up to 4
      • Unofficial Transcripts
        • Not required, but if you have them go ahead and upload them.
    • Step 3: Certify everything is correct
      • Submit Application and pay $70 fee (non-refundable)

Official transcripts must be submitted directly from your college or university to UH Mānoa. You are required to submit transcripts from each post-secondary institution you have attended (excluding any University of Hawaiʻi System institution: UHM, UHH, UHWO, or any Hawaii Community College). Unofficial, faxed, hand-carried, or student copies of academic documents will not be accepted.
