On May 9, 2018, the Hawai‛i Symphony Orchestra will perform a symphony at the Neal S. Blaisdell Center about Hawai‛i’s bird extinction crisis and the hope for saving our remaining native birds. The concert is free to school groups, grades 4–12, that apply and are accepted to the program. Schools are responsible for their own transportation to the concert, and teachers must implement a brief lesson plan to prepare students before the symphony.

Symphony of the Hawaiian Birds is an innovative multidisciplinary project, which aims to educate students on O‘ahu through science and music about Hawai‛i’s native bird species and the importance of conservation efforts. It is a collaboration among the UH Mānoa College of Education, Colleges of Arts and Humanities, and the College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources, as well as two community partners – the Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum and the Hawai‘i Symphony Orchestra. The project will culminate in an integrated educational performance consisting of original music compositions by UH faculty, original artwork and animation, and narration that will teach elementary and secondary students about the many issues concerning Hawaiian birds.

Apply here by January 22, 2018.
