The College of Education received 16 Summer Success Scholarships. Created by the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Outreach College, the new scholarship program was created to assist with retention. Funding for a three-credit summer school class enables students to stay on target for graduation. The following are testimonials from some of the 2017 recipients.

Thank you for this generous scholarship. In pursuit of a degree to teach and help others in Hawaiʻi, I will endeavor to be a credit to my heritage. This award will allow me to complete STE 440 during the summer as opposed to taking the course during the fall when I will be beginning my observation practicum and finishing the requirements for my focus area.

Receiving the 2017 UH Mānoa Summer Success Scholarship enables me to continue to achieve the goals I’ve set for myself. This scholarship lessens the financial burden I would have had. I would like to say mahalo nui loa again for giving me this wonderful opportunity.
~Kuaiwi Laka Makua, BS Kinesiology Health & Exercise Science Major

I must say that the scholarship was not only unexpected but deeply appreciated and a tremendous assistance not only for me, but also for my parents. The scholarship check was used to cover my summer tuition. Although I did participate in the graduation ceremony, I needed to take a class during the summer to fulfill my graduation obligations. I am sincerely honored to be a recipient, and I give my word that I will do my best during the Summer 2017 session.
~Jace Shiroma, BS Kinesiology Health & Exercise Science Major

I was very fortunate to receive not only the Summer Success Scholarship, but also the Need Base Scholarship for the 2017 summer session. During the regular semester, I usually take around 19 credits and work about 38 hours a week to pay for tuition. Luckily for me, I was granted these lifesaving scholarships, allowing me to put my all into my courses and stay on track with my game plan for graduation. Also, being awarded this money has boosted my confidence to not give up on school, confirming that I’m doing what is right for me and my future, to push through, Kūlia I Ka Nuʻu, strive for the highest. I feel like UH Mānoa sees and recognizes my efforts as a serious student and has my back.

I am very appreciative to be a recipient of the 2017 University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa Summer Success Scholarship. It is bringing me closer to my goal of graduating with a degree in Elementary Education. I have a passion for education, and I look forward to the day that I can put my knowledge to use. Mahalo for the support!
~Delane Savage, BEd Elementary Education Major

This scholarship has positively impacted my academic career as it allows me to take summer courses to ensure I graduate on time. It also lightens my load during the Fall and Spring Semesters since I also have a minor to complete. This award relieves me of the financial burden of paying for summer courses and pushes me to uphold the high academic standard that the program represents.
