A delegation of College of Education (COE) faculty members from the Departments of Educational Foundations, Educational Psychology, and Educational Technology; the Institute for Teacher Education; and the Office of the Dean were warmly received by representatives from academic institutions in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) from June 2–13, 2014.
More than 320 faculty members, educational leaders, lecturers, researchers, and post-graduates from universities, colleges, and training centers in both cities participated in workshops led by COE faculty. Katherine Ratliff and Allison Henward conducted sessions on teaching English to young children and on family, school, and community partnerships in education. Curtis Ho led workshops on the use of technology in education, and Marie Iding taught sessions on writing in English for professional publication. Leaders of the participating Vietnam institutions expressed appreciation for the workshops and invited the COE to return to conduct future sessions.
One of the major outcomes of the visit was a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed by the COE and the HCMC University of Education (UE). Faculty from both institutions engaged in rich discussions on future collaborations, including possible degree opportunities.
“The result of our visit in Vietnam was amazingly productive and surpassed our expectations,” Dean Don Young said. “We find many Vietnam educational institutions great partners for developing joint programs, short-courses, and professional workshops. They expressed high interest in early childhood education and special education.”
As part of the agenda in Vietnam, COE faculty members paid visits to other educational institutions and relevant stakeholders in order to promote a COE and UH Mānoa presence in Vietnam, build relationships, and develop new long-term partnerships. Two of these Vietnam institutions are already planning a visit to UH Mānoa this fall to follow up on collaboration with the COE and to meet other UH colleges.
