HI Now features ʻAiea High School teacher, Keola Kalani, in the latest installment of Hawaii News Now’s (HNN) education series. In support of the ongoing Be a Hero. Be a Teacher. campaign, the University of Hawai’i and College of Education are working with HNN to produce short education-focused segments, which focus on the people and the programs that are helping to change the narrative about our public schools, education system, and teaching in Hawai’i. Kalani, a Hawaiian language, history, culture, and hula teacher, is earning his Post Baccalaureate Certificate in Teacher Education-Secondary (PBCTE-Secondary) from the COE. He is a Hawai’i Department of Education emergency hire who received a Grow Our Own Teachers Initiative tuition stipend. Already dedicated to and passionate about his career in education, Kalani says the Grow Our Own program came to him unexpectedly and that he is forever grateful for the opportunity to earn his teaching degree while working full-time.
