“My choice to become a licensed special education teacher was influenced by my three siblings, who were born with disabilities. As we were all placed in public schools, I had the opportunity to sit in a few of their IEP meetings, which really opened my eyes to the world of special education. Although there were days when we questioned the efforts of the school, I could always see the amount of care and consideration that the Special Education teachers put into their jobs. I saw how remarkable this career could be, and I always had a feeling that I would end up on the path I am today.
Growing up with three siblings with disabilities, I developed a sense of responsibility when it came to advocating for not only them but other people with disabilities. I found myself joining clubs like Best Buddies, where I would spend my lunch and recess time in special education classrooms hanging out with students who had disabilities. Being immersed in the culture became normal for me, so I only saw it fit to join the community of Special Education Educators to make a difference in so many students’ lives.
