Why did you choose to become a teacher, in general?

I choose to become a teacher because it has been my lifelong dream to be a teacher but ultimately in the last ten years of my life, I was brought back into the school setting where my dream was sparked again with a different interest in helping our children with special needs and being able to be a part of their lifelong successes.

Why did you choose to become licensed in special education?

I choose special education because I enjoy being able to support our students who are often misunderstood and need additional support and guidance. Being in PreK and early intervention special education has given me an opportunity to support the foundational skills that are needed in life. I have always felt that being a part of a student’s success and achievements that families felt may not be achievable is a tremendous win for all involved.

Why do you feel it is important to have diversity in the classroom?

Diversity is a critical component of child development especially in regard to students of special needs and supporting inclusion interactions. It is important that as a teacher of children with special needs that we support interactions and inclusion opportunities for all learners to encourage inclusivity and diversity. Having a diverse teaching staff is a vital part of students’ success and learning, by exposing students to be aware of the differences that we all bring to a community. In addition, having a diverse teaching staff creates a culturally rich environment within not only the classroom but the school as well.
