Every student deserves to have a teacher that empowers them to communicate effectively, advocate for his/her self, and develop problem solving skills. It is my daily mission to build these skills to empower every teacher and student I come into contact with.

Derek Govin is a former special education teacher where he served HIDOE in middle and high school classroom settings for six years. He has been a classroom teacher for a total of nine years, with a focus on supporting students with extensive needs including intellectual disabilities, autism, and multiple disabilities. He is the co-founder and co-coordinator of the SPEDucator Project, and is now the current President for the Hawaii Council for Exceptional Children. He firmly believes in the power of professional learning communities as an approach to support the retention of special education teachers.
