Why did you choose to become a teacher, in general?

I have worked as an Educational Assistant with Special Education teachers and students for the past ten years and during this time I have grown to love working with this unique population of students. I feel it is a natural transition from Educational Assistant to Special Education teacher because of the skills I have learned along the way. Over my ten years working with a variety of teachers I have been inspired by many to work hard on teaching and supporting students. One person I worked with was Special Education teacher Denise Mahi who showed me what it means to show aloha to students and the impact that one person can have on a student during their school day. Mrs. Mahi taught her students about kuleana (responsibility), malama (take care of), and aloha for oneself as well as others. Another important mentor was LeNore Momi Vincent who taught me how to work with young students and provide effective early intervention services. Mrs. Vincent helped foster my passion for working with preschool age students because of her excitement, creativity, and compassion for young learners. It is through my experience as an Educational Assistant that I became passionate about helping students be successful in school.

Why did you choose to become licensed in special education?

My background is in Special Education specifically assisting students in an inclusion classroom. Every student is a unique learner and students identified as receiving special education services require individualized interventions based on their disabilities. I feel it is important for all learners to have access to the same education and support as well as those who would benefit from specialized services like speech therapy, occupational therapy, and physical therapy. I have seen the impact that early interventions have on students and how it can lead to academic success.

Why do you feel it is important to have diversity in the classroom?

Diversity in the classroom is important because it allows for a richer educational experience. Diversity in ethnic backgrounds, cognition, and ability levels strengthens a student’s experience. Inclusion classrooms are a wonderful example of how students and teachers can benefit from the diversity of each student.
