Why did you choose to become a teacher, in general?

I loved school growing up and would often pretend to be a teacher for my younger siblings and create activities for us to do. I have been working with children since I graduated high school in 2016 in a child care, preschool, and school-age setting and finally feel like I am ready to be in a classroom and teach the next generation.

Why did you choose to become licensed in special education?

I have always felt a lot of empathy for those in special education, even in elementary school, and would find myself going out of my way to make sure they are okay and assisted when needed. Since working with a variety of ages, there were a few children with special needs that would come into our program and I would do my best to help them learn or do simple tasks. It’s very rewarding when you’re able to make a difference for students within special education. I remember being so proud and happy when a child with speech delay said my name for the first time.

Why do you feel it is important to have diversity in the classroom?

Our islands are filled with diversity and it is important for children to recognize and celebrate their similarities and differences. Our communities will grow stronger when we can all respect one another whether we are the same or not.
