Why did you choose to become a teacher, in general?

I have wanted to be a teacher for as long as I can remember. My mom was a teacher so I grew up helping in her classroom. I quickly realized the difference my mom was making in the students lives as well as their families. She inspired her students and she made her classroom a home for the students who needed it most. I knew I wanted to be apart of something like this.

Why did you choose to become licensed in special education?

I chose Special Education because it allows me to make a significant difference in the lives of students who often face unique challenges. I am truly inspired by the opportunity to create a supportive and nurturing learning environment where every student can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. I teach because I want to shape young minds to be kind and caring humans in society. Teaching is not just a career choice for me; it is a calling driven by a deep sense of compassion and a desire to make a meaningful impact on the lives of those who need it most.

Why do you feel it is important to have diversity in the classroom?

Diversity in the classroom is crucial for several reasons. A diverse classroom mirrors the reality of the broader world, preparing students to navigate and thrive in an interconnected, multicultural society, especially here in Hawai’i. Exposure to diverse perspectives, backgrounds, and experiences fosters a more inclusive and tolerant learning environment, promoting empathy and understanding among students. A diverse teaching staff brings a variety of teaching styles, approaches, and insights, catering to the unique needs of a heterogeneous student body. Students benefit not only academically but also socially and emotionally, developing a broader worldview and acquiring essential interpersonal skills. Finally, diverse role models among teachers can inspire students from different backgrounds to pursue their academic and professional aspirations. In conclusion, diversity in the classroom enhances the overall quality of education, prepares students for global citizenship, and contributes to the creation of a more equitable and harmonious society.
