Why did you choose to become a teacher, in general?
I chose to become a teacher because I wanted to make a difference for students with disabilities. Growing up, I experienced a lack of advocacy in special education, and I was one of the students affected by it. Many of the schools I attended refused to provide me with the support I needed. After years of fighting for my rights, it took one dedicated teacher to finally advocate for me and help me get the assistance I required. I want to become a teacher because I aim to be an advocate for students with disabilities and be the person I needed when I was in school.
Why did you choose to become licensed in special education?
I chose to pursue a career in special education because I have dyslexia and dysgraphia. Growing up, I faced challenges in getting the support I needed and finding ways to cope with my disabilities. By entering the field of special education, I have the opportunity to help students who may be struggling in similar ways. I want to show them that their disabilities do not define them and encourage them to focus on their achievements instead.
