Why did you choose to become a teacher, in general?

I have seen and experienced how teachers can make or break a student. I know what it feels like to walk out of a classroom feeling utterly demoralized, or completely empowered, all because of how a teacher treats a student. I chose to become a teacher because I want to wield the power of teaching responsibly, and ensure that I play an active role in treating students with respect, care, and a high regard for their intelligence and ability to progress and excel. I chose to become a teacher, so that I can do my part to ensure that students can walk out of a classroom or a school feeling that they are full of potential and promise.

Why did you choose to become licensed in special education?

My child was diagnosed with ASD at 2.5 years old, and we knew it was a matter of time before we would navigate the special education system as a family. I felt unknowledgeable, alone, and anxious, not knowing what would await us and how I would support my child. At some point, I realized that my problem was sitting on the sidelines and worrying about the future, instead of getting in the fighting ring together with a community to fight for our children and our students together. I chose to become licensed in special education so that I could build possibilities and access to education and disability rights with fellow teachers and families, because I believe that nobody should do this alone. I chose to join the field as a teacher, because I want to model for my child what building community looks like, and how we can shape collective care together, whether you are a student, parent, educator, or staff.
