Why did you choose to pursue to pursue the PhD, Learning Design & Technology program?

I have an interest in teaching and learning with technology. I want to support learning with tools that make education engaging and fun. I chose to pursue the PhD in Learning Design & Technology program because it aligns perfectly with my passion for education, technology, and continuous learning. My academic journey, which includes degrees in Elementary Education, Second Language Studies, and Learning Design and Technology, has consistently focused on improving educational experiences and outcomes. The PhD program offers an opportunity to deepen my expertise and contribute to advancing the field of educational technology.

My professional experience as an Instructional Designer at the University of Hawaii has exposed me to the critical role that technology plays in modern education. Working with various online learning management systems, developing asynchronous courses, and supporting public health workforce initiatives has shown me the immense potential of well-designed educational technology. The PhD program will allow me to explore these areas more deeply and develop innovative solutions to current educational challenges.

Furthermore, my research interests in online identity and critical digital literacy align closely with the program’s focus. I’m particularly excited about conducting research to understand how students and teachers perceive their online identities in education.

Why did you want to be a Social Media Ambassador for your program?

I want to help share information and build networks for better connection between people. I wanted to encourage education, technology, and community engagement. As someone who has gone through the Hawaii educational system and achieved academic excellence, I have a unique perspective to share about the opportunities and experiences available at the University of Hawaii. My extensive background in education, including degrees in Elementary Education, Second Language Studies, and Learning Design and Technology, has given me a deep understanding of the program’s value.

Being a Social Media Ambassador allows me to share my journey and insights with prospective students, potentially inspiring them to pursue similar paths in educational technology. Moreover, as someone with international experiences, I understand the importance of effective communication. I believe I can leverage my skills to create compelling content that showcases the program’s strengths and opportunities. Lastly, I see this role as an extension of my commitment to lifelong learning and community building. By serving as a Social Media Ambassador, I can contribute to building a diverse and engaged community of learners passionate about advancing education through technology improving learning experiences for students in Hawaii and beyond.

Anything else you’d like to share? 

My experiences studying abroad in Japan and South Korea have broadened my understanding of different educational systems and cultural perspectives. This global outlook informs my approach to instructional design and my belief in the importance of personalized learning experiences that cater to individual strengths and challenges. I am currently living on campus at East West Center, working full-time in Public Health as a Junior Specialist, and a member of AECT-HI and UHM-PLC.
