Congratulations on being a runner-up in the first COE Classroom Makeover Contest! What does this award mean to you?
This award truly warms my heart. As a new preschool teacher, my goal has always been to create a classroom that feels like a child’s first home—a place where they feel loved, safe, and inspired to learn. Being recognized for that vision means so much. It reminds me that even small efforts to nurture belonging and joy can make a big difference. I’m so grateful to Fisher Hawaiʻi, the COE New Teacher Closet, and everyone who supports early educators like me in creating magical spaces for our youngest learners.
Where do you work?
I work at Kealakehe Elementary School as a Preschool Special Education Teacher.
How did you become interested in the field of education? Special Education?
My interest in Special Education began with my deep belief that every child deserves to feel seen, valued, and capable of success. During my early experiences working with young children, I was drawn to those who needed a little extra support to communicate, connect, or participate fully. Seeing their small steps of progress—like a first word, a shared smile, or newfound independence—sparked something in me. It inspired me to pursue a career in special education, so I could learn how to meet each child where they are and help them thrive through patience, creativity, and compassion.
How has the COE program impacted or benefited your career path?
The COE program has been instrumental in shaping my professional growth as an early childhood special educator. It equipped me with evidence-based strategies, hands-on experience, and strong mentorship that strengthened my ability to meet the diverse needs of learners. The program has guided me in building inclusive, developmentally appropriate environments that foster confidence, communication, and success for every child
Is there anyone in particular who inspired you to pursue a career in education?
I was inspired to become a teacher by a second-grade teacher who made learning fun and meaningful for every student. I’m also lucky to have a brother who has been a high school teacher for many years; seeing his dedication to students has given me even more respect for the teaching profession
What is your philosophy of teaching?
My teaching philosophy focuses on providing a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment where all young learners can thrive. I prioritize individualized support, hands-on learning, and social-emotional development to help each child build confidence, independence, and a lifelong love of learning.
What will you do with your Fisher Hawaiʻi gift card?
I plan to use my Fisher Hawaiʻi gift card to purchase classroom materials that will enhance learning and creativity for my preschool students. Items like art supplies, books, and sensory materials will help me create a nurturing and engaging environment where every child can explore, play, and grow.
