Title

Designing and testing innovative solutions for pollution problems in delhi

Type

Talk Story / Paper

Description

Delhi, known to be one of the most polluted cities in India. As children and students being affected by air and plastic pollution daily, we decided to take action. We created AirPuro (air purifier) which costs significantly lesser than the ones out in the market and made of natural substances like neem extract and activated charcoal. We recorded a significant increase in air quality with its use. LDPE is the most common type of plastic in usage. It’s a linearly branched polymer with rigid C-C bonds. It takes about 1000 years to degrade naturally, mainly because of its hydrophobicity. We isolated the most efficient microbial strains from a nearby dumpsite. We recorded that LDPE could degrade in 25 weeks rather than 500 years! Through this presentation, we would like to showcase one of the pillars of STEMS^2 (sense of place) by the initiative we took to overcome challenges around us.
