Description

This action research study explores how expectations of neatness in a secondary photography classroom may influence student confidence. In many art classrooms, neatness is viewed as a sign of effort, professionalism, and quality. However, high standards of presentation may also affect how students perceive their own abilities, particularly when they struggle with organization or fine motor skills. This study examines whether explicit neatness expectations impact students’ confidence in their creative work and willingness to take artistic risks. Data were collected through student self-assessments, surveys, and analysis of project outcomes. By exploring the connection between presentation standards and student self-efficacy, this research seeks to better understand how classroom norms shape student experiences. The goal is to inform more equitable and supportive instructional practices that balance craftsmanship with creativity in arts education.
