Ethnic identity formation of Filipino adolescents in Hawai‘i
Oral Presentation
This study investigated the ethnic identity formation of Filipino adolescents in Hawai‘i. Specifically, the study focused on Filipino high school students who are or were enrolled in the newly developed Filipino Curriculum that was implemented in schools statewide. We utilized a qualitative methods approach and interviewed Filipino high school students about their personal experiences and experiences in the new Filipino course. Their responses were applied to Catherine Cooper’s Bridging Multiple Worlds theory. Students reported the Filipino course to be a resource in their ethnic identity development and shared their lived experiences growing up and developing their Filipino identity.
