Exploring Special Education Teachers’ Attitudes and Knowledge of Physical Activity for Students with Disabilities:A Systematic Review
Poster Session
Special education teachers should be aware of the importance of physical activity (PA) as it contributes to the physical, social, and psychological well-being of students with disabilities. Mainly, PA supports students’ overall health while fostering social inclusion and independence. Participation in Physical Education (PE) provides structured PA opportunities, but participation in PE and PA opportunities can be impacted by teacher perception of PA and PE. Research has largely focused on PE teachers’ perspectives, leaving a gap in understanding how special education teachers perceive and support PA for students with disabilities.
This systematic review examines special education teachers’ attitudes and knowledge regarding PA, considering factors such as training, experience, and resources that shape their perspectives. Their awareness and collaboration with PE teachers and professionals are essential in creating inclusive PA opportunities. The findings will contribute to teacher education, professional development, and policy recommendations to enhance PA access for students with disabilities.
