Title

Facilitating Deaf Student Access to American Sign Language Interpreters in the College Classroom

Type

Oral Presentation

Description

A national shortage of certified ASL interpreters introduces challenges for campuses in providing access for deaf students. This presentation will show how UH Maui College provides ASL interpretation services for the growing number of deaf students at our college via Zoom when on-site interpreters are not available.
For classes that are scheduled either in Zoom rooms or Zoom Ready Rooms, assisting the instructor and interpreters in setting up the connections is relatively simple. However, in cases when a class that a deaf student takes is in a room that is not Zoom connected, a portable Zoom cart is used.
The Zoom carts were originally set up for an instructor to use to teach in non-Zoom classrooms, these carts were modified to make them suitable to facilitating ASL interpreters to Zoom into the classrooms and effectively communicate with and on behalf of the deaf students.
