Generative AI in Higher Education: A Systematic Review of Student Usage Patterns and Perceptions
Poster Session
This poster presents findings from a systematic literature review examining how college students utilize generative AI technologies, particularly following ChatGPT’s November 2022 release. As these AI tools have rapidly transformed the academic landscape, understanding student engagement patterns has become crucial for educational stakeholders. This review synthesizes recent research addressing two key questions: 1) In what ways do college students report using generative AI to support their learning needs? and 2) What perceived advantages and disadvantages do students identify? Following Cochrane methodology guidelines, this review analyzes peer-reviewed literature documenting student-reported AI applications across academic contexts. Preliminary findings reveal diverse usage patterns, from writing assistance and content organization to supplemental instruction and accessibility support. The review further examines tensions between productivity benefits and concerns regarding academic integrity. This research contributes timely insights for educators developing responsive policies and pedagogical approaches in an increasingly AI-integrated educational environment.
