Title

Persistence of Transgender Students of Color in STEM Fields: A Qualitative Phenomenological Inquiry

Type

Oral Presentation

Description

Significant evidence has shown that students of color (SOC) are less likely to obtain a degree in STEM. Research on lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) students have similarly reported decreased entry and persistence rates in collegiate collegiate STEM. Despite these concerning statistics, current studies neglect to consider how the intersection of multiple, marginalized identities may affect a student’s ability to navigate educational domains. To date, there is no research examining how a SOC identity and transgender identity informs STEM persistence.
