Title

Restoring ʻĀina and Kānaka Health: Education, Food Sovereignty, and Cultural Renewal

Type

Oral Presentation

Description

The intimate relationship between the vitality of ʻāina (land) and the well-being of Kānaka ʻŌiwi (Native Hawaiians) is foundational, yet Kānaka ʻŌiwi experience disproportionately higher rates of chronic diseases. This research investigates the potential of ʻāina and culture-based education to rebalance this relationship and improve health outcomes. Employing autoethnography, survey, and moʻolelo (stories), this study explores how such educational initiatives influence overall health decisions, such as nourishment and lifestyle choices, and food sourcing, among Kanaka participants. We explore the relationship between the health of local Pacific Island foods and cultural identity.
