Evaluating Second Step’s (An SEL Curriculum) Alignment with the Nā Hopena A’o Framework
Poster
This mini data pilot study evaluates the effectiveness of a Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) curriculum – Second Step – against the Nā Hopena A’o Framework in an elementary school in Hawai’i. Data was collected through an individual counselor interview and staff questionnaire, and analyzed against the HĀ Framework to determine if the intention of Second Step curriculum to be effective in the context of Hawai’i. Findings revealed five key themes – Consistency, Collaboration, Commitment, Clarity, and Culture – that impacted effective SEL implementation. The pilot also identified gaps in familiarity with the HĀ Framework, suggesting a need for deeper professional learning. These findings inform a larger evaluation focused on strengthening culturally grounded SEL practices that support both student development and educator well-being.
