Title

Tapping Out Stress: Jiu-Jitsu’s Effect on Teacher Resilience

Type

Oral Presentation

Description

Stress and burnout are persistent challenges in the field of education, which greatly affects new and experienced teachers. This mixed-methods self-study explores how the practice of the martial art Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) outside of teaching affects teacher resilience. Using the Teacher Thriving Scale, this study collected data using bi-weekly surveys, daily reflections, and personal journal entries from teachers who train Jiu-Jitsu and the teacher researcher. Qualitative data were analyzed using thematic coding and quantitative survey data were analyzed to find patterns among other teachers who train Jiu-Jitsu outside of teaching. Findings suggest that training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu may serve as a possible solution for developing teacher resilience to respond effectively to the stressors of the classroom. Implications for teacher wellness programs and the integration of martial arts in teacher resilience research are discussed.
