The Effect of Game Based Learning on Student Engagement in a Japanese World Language Class

This study took place in a high school level two Japanese world language class and explored the effect of game based learning in a Japanese world language class that also uses a communicative language teaching approach. Game based learning has been studied and noted to have a positive effect on student engagement in classes. With the new Hawaii World-Readiness Standards for Learning Language and the shift to more communication focused instruction, engagement remains important. The main focus of this study was on the how game based learning effects student engagement in a Japanese world language class. To this end, short games that could be easily modified and implemented were employed. The study hopes to improve student engagement and experience in language courses and to provide other language teachers new tools to engage students.
