The Impact of School Beautification Projects – (specifically murals) – on Sense of Belonging in Hawai’i
Poster Session
There is recognized importance of school beautification in shaping positive educational environments, however there is limited research on how student-driven creative efforts such as murals foster sense of belonging, connection, ownership, and school pride. Murals offer students opportunities for creative expression, collaboration, and investment in their school communities environment. This study aims to investigate how student involvement in creating school murals influences their sense of belonging within the school and its community.Using both qualitative and quantitative data gathered via student interviews, surveys, observations, and aloha circles this study captures diverse perspectives on how participation in art projects shape school culture. Preliminary findings suggest that student-driven murals foster a greater sense of belonging, ownership, pride, and connection. This research provides valuable insights for educators and administrators seeking to promote student well-being and creating a more welcoming, supportive educational environment that supports students in their creative interests and collaboration efforts.
