aCRC Community Connection

Updates from your friends at the Advancing Culturally-Relevant Computing Project

Aloha Kākou!

Happy October from the Advancing Culturally Relevant Computing (aCRC) project! This week in our “community connection” newsletter we want to highlight two teachers who have done exceptional work in integrating Computer Science into their classrooms. Not only do they currently serve on the aCRC team, but they are also Hawai’i Teacher of the Year nominees! Read more about them below.

As always, we are here to support you however we can. We look forward to growing our culturally relevant computing community together.

aCRC Teacher of the Year Nominees

This week we want to congratulate two of our aCRC team members! Kawika Gonzales and Topher Pike were both recognized as Teachers of the Year for their respective complexes and finalists for the State Teacher of the Year!

Kawika teaches at Kaunakakai Elementary School on Moloka’i and Topher teaches at Chiefess Kapi’olani Elementary School in Hilo on Hawai’i Island. They were recognized by Governor Josh Green and Superintendent Keith Hayashi at a ceremony on October 3rd at Washington Place.

We want to recognize their hard work and share how proud we are of their achievements! You can see a bit of their classrooms and teaching philosophies in this video that was shared at the ceremony.

We look forward to seeing how culturally relevant teaching continues to make a positive impact on students. Congratulations again to them both!
