Why did you choose to become a teacher, in general?

I never wanted to be a teacher growing up which might surprise the reader and actually i dreaded high school. It was my experiences a long with my inability to understand math concepts that let me believe that I was not a good student. So when someone suggested I substitute teach I had my reservations. But I needed the money and so I chose to take the course and give it a try. Shockingly I fell in love with the students at each school and the idea that I could actually help a student who struggles like I did was truly inspiring and what made me decide to pursue my education.

Why did you choose to become licensed in special education?

Special education is near and dear to my heart. Both my maternal grandmother and mother work in the DOE and in this field. Needless to say when I subbed in these specific classes and saw the need for local teachers to step up I was all in. I have seen how much more engaged students are when the teacher has relatable experiences.

Why do you feel it is important to have diversity in the classroom?

Living in Hawaii we are surrounded by diversity from where we shop and as well as in our own families. I believe that this is an advantage because from a young age we are taught to be respectful of other people, their thoughts, ideas, beliefs and traditions. We practice many different cultural diverse practices every time we go to a potluck party. It is in the atmosphere the food we eat and in everything we do. It is a blessing to grow up with such a diverse acceptable mindset.
