Why did you choose to become a special education teacher?

My first experience with working with children was as a 1:1 with a child with severe autism. I accepted a job as an EA without knowing anything about special education. My first day of work was grueling, physically painful, and emotionally taxing, but I found myself wanting it to be the next day because I wanted to enhance my student’s life to the best of my ability. Soon after, I enrolled in the PB Cert program at UHM and became a special education teacher.

Why do you continue to teach special education?

Simply put, I love my students and their unique personalities and everything they have to offer. I also learn from them every day!
