This lesson sequence is designed to have students make connections between exponential functions and real-world data. Students will discover a time in recent American history where there was an exponential growth in incarceration rates that disproportionally affected communities of color. Students will see how through math, we can describe the racial inequity through another perspective. Having many students who might be directly affected by this data, I feel that it is important for students to see how math can be used to describe their lived experiences.
