The purpose of this lesson is to understand the rapidly-changing developments of communities where students’ schools are and the effects it is having in the lives of the students, regardless of class, race, or gender. In particular, students will have a better understanding of what gentrification is, how it is affecting their communities and why, and what they can do to stay informed and involved. Students will be able to answer important questions about their particular housing experience, including: At what rate has my rent increased in the past year? Past 5 years? Since I was born? What is the median income for me to be able to afford an apartment in my community? Using a variation of historical and cultural understanding of Historic Koreatown along with numerical analysis using data sets, students will have a better understanding of the cost of living in their community and how this reflects a common trend in the city, and world.
